International telework / digital nomad
What it is: Spain's digital nomad visa (officially the international telework authorization, introduced under the Ley de Startups) lets non-EU remote workers live legally in Spain while working mainly for employers or clients based outside the country — your Spanish-client work cannot exceed 20% of total professional activity.
What you need: A work contract or client evidence, private health insurance covering Spain, a criminal record certificate, and proof of your professional background. A minimum monthly income threshold applies (linked to the Spanish minimum wage — check the official page for the current figure, as it can update).
How you apply: Two paths exist: apply from abroad at a Spanish consulate, or — if already legally in Spain — apply in-country through the UGE-CE online portal.
Practical note: Processing after a complete filing typically takes one to three months, though incomplete documents are a common reason for delays. If approved, you still need a separate TIE fingerprint appointment to get the physical card.
