Non-lucrative residence
What it is: The non-lucrative residence visa lets non-EU citizens live in Spain without working — it is popular with retirees, people with passive income, rental income, savings, or investments.
What you need to show: Sufficient funds to support yourself and any dependants without working in Spain (the threshold is linked to the IPREM indicator and updates annually — check the current figure at your consulate), plus private health insurance covering Spain, a clean criminal record, and a medical certificate.
How you apply: The application is made at a Spanish consulate in your country of residence, not in Spain. Once approved, you enter on a visa, register on the padrón, and collect your TIE.
Practical note: The visa is initially valid for one year and can be renewed; after five years you can apply for long-term residence.
