Cl@ve or FNMT digital certificate

What this is for

What it is: Spain's public administration runs largely online, and you need a digital identity to access it. The two main options are the FNMT citizen certificate (a software certificate issued after an in-person identity check) and Cl@ve (a government identity system with PIN and permanent modes).

What you can use it for:

  • Filing tax returns
  • Checking Social Security records
  • Signing official documents
  • Tracking residence applications
  • Accessing health and benefits portals

Practical note: Getting one early can save a lot of time — many procedures that seem to need an office visit can often be done digitally once you have it. EU citizens with an electronic national ID card may also be able to use it directly on some portals.

Documents that often slow people down

Identity and civil records

  • Valid passport or EU national ID.
  • Birth, marriage, or partnership records where relevant.
  • Legalization or Hague apostille for many foreign public documents.
  • Sworn Spanish translations when documents are not accepted as-is.

Spain-side basics

  • Address in Spain and, when requested, padrón certificate.
  • Immigration appointment confirmation.
  • Correct EX form for your procedure.
  • Paid tasa receipt, often Modelo 790 with the matching code.

Money, health, purpose

  • Proof of economic means for routes that require it.
  • Health insurance or public coverage proof where required.
  • School admission, remote-work evidence, family link, or permit approval.
  • Criminal record certificate for some visas and residence routes.
